What was it all about?

It is difficult to imagine that music could have ever risen to the level of warfare—unless you’re living in the 21st century, when culture wars occupy both our airwaves and our minds. Similarly, in 19th century Europe composers, musicians, critics, and audiences turned against each other in a dispute about tradition and progress, and about the meaning of music. The dispute reached a surprising intensity, complete with a war of words in the press and highly charged public demonstrations in concert halls. Known as WAR OF THE ROMANTICS, it engulfed several countries, filling key journals and magazines with verbal polemics, frequently marred by vitriol and personal insults. Almost all of the Romantic composers were embroiled in it.

New york city production, 2023

Following a series of sold-out performances in Philadelphia in 2019, War of the Romantics made its way to NYC, marking the launch of a multi-city tour of its award-winning international ensemble of actors and musicians.

One of the highlights of the NYC production is its setting: the stunning New York City architectural treasure, The Van Alen Mansion (Upper East Side). The audience is immediately transported into a 19th century music salon, where one would expect to be welcomed by a bejeweled hostess and join the company of opinionated, if eccentric, guests. The setting provides an ideal environment for the play, making both the story and music feel fresh, personal, and highly relevant.
