WAR OF THE ROMANTICS: From Salons to Barricades

A musical culture war that became political, then personal.

Embroiled in a dispute about tradition vs. progress and the meaning of music itself, composers, musicians, and audiences in 19th century Europe turned against each other, causing the most intense rupture in music history. Marked by a vicious war of words in the press and highly charged public demonstrations in concert halls, it was eerily similar to what we are witnessing today in the form of identity or issue politics.

Told with humor, passion, plenty of drama, and beautiful music, the ‘classical musical’ War of the Romantics transports audiences into the salons and barricades of Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, Warsaw and other major cities and into the fascinating lives of famous musicians. It’s like musical time travel, only better.

NYC performance: May 21, 2023 at 4 p.m.
